Jordan | World Bank | Environmental Impact Assessment ~ dam | Feasibility studies for water storage and agricultural development scheme in Jordan - an earth fill embankment dam to form a storage reservoir in a side tributary of the River Jordan. To maximise project benefits, the dam was designed to impound a gross storage volume of 55 MCM which would inundate approximately 45 ha of existing, irrigated land. Study augmented previous preliminary work by addressing effect of the reservoir on the drainage of the irrigated land around the reservoir perimeter and water quality of the storage reservoir. Various sources of water to the reservoir had different chemistries from freshwater to brackish water to boron-rich waters. A flow model computed final water quality assuming certain flow rates for different parts of the year for different sources - used to identify which crops would be sensitive to the water from the reservoir and how best to organise the agricultural development downstream of the reservoir to maximise benefits of the stored water. |
